50 South West events share in funding

Monday, 12 December 2016

Festivals, fairs and fun runs are among the community events that will shine a little brighter next year with support from the South West Development Commission.

SWDC chairman Stuart Hicks said a total of $147,500 through the South West Events Program will assist 50 events to take place in the region in 2017.

"We are delighted to be able to support events that benefit the region," Mr Hicks said.

"Not only do events create vibrancy in communities, but they also attract people to the places they are held in, lift the profile of the region and contribute to the local economy.

"Many events receiving a financial helping hand are driven by volunteers, so this funding will support their efforts to make our cities and towns such great places to live and visit."

Mr Hicks said the annual contestable grants program had a track record of helping new events to get off the ground and more established events to grow.

"Funding will support both new events such as the Bunbury Fringe Festival 2017 and more established events including the Harvey Harvest Festival," he said.

Other events receiving grants include the Manjimup Cherry Harmony Festival, Margaret River Readers and Writers Festival, and Nannup Flower and Garden Festival.

Through the South West Events Program, organisations were invited to apply to SWDC for up to $6000 per event.

To help people familiarise themselves with the application process, information sessions were held around the region.

SWDC works to make the South West region an even better place to live, work and invest. Developing the economy and enhancing quality of life are two of its aims.
