Dolphin centre gears up for transformation

Monday, 26 February 2018

While locals and visitors enjoy the newly-enhanced Koombana Foreshore, efforts are under way to breathe new life into more of Bunbury's waterfront areas.

The transformation of Koombana Bay into a world-class tourist and community precinct is continuing with preparations now taking place for the redevelopment of the Dolphin Discovery Centre.

Though people can still visit the centre's interpretative centre and café as well as participate in tours, outside areas have been fenced off to allow Bunbury-based Perkins Builders to start carrying out works.

Once complete, the revamped tourist attraction will be a landmark building boasting modern exhibits as well as a new café, multi-use space, and souvenir shop.

The redevelopment of the DDC, together with the revitalisation of the Koombana Foreshore, forms part of stage one of the Transforming Bunbury's Waterfront project.

South West Development Commission acting chief executive officer Rebecca Ball said it was an exciting time to be in Bunbury and see the vision for the waterfront being made into reality.

"It's fantastic to see so many people out and about and enjoying the new Koombana Foreshore," Ms Ball said.

"The redevelopment of the Dolphin Discovery Centre is the next step in the process of transforming the waterfront, and is expected to be a catalyst for growth in the tourism market.

"Already this project is creating local jobs for people by having a local company contracted to deliver the redevelopment.

"The new centre will create a fresh new experience for visitors, attracting people to Bunbury who will easily be able to walk between the central business district, Koombana Foreshore and Dolphin Discovery Centre."

The DDC will remain open from 8am to 4pm seven days a week until the end of April. It will be closed from May 1 to allow for construction to take place, with its doors scheduled to reopen late 2018.

Planning for stages two and three of the Transforming Bunbury's Waterfront project, including environmental studies for marine infrastructure, is under way.

Stage two involves enhancement and integration of two key locations: Casuarina Drive, including BP Beach and the foreshore, and Jetty Road causeway.

The final stage comprises the transformation of Casuarina Boat Harbour through the creation of a marina, mixed-use area and marine industry precinct.
