Milestone moment for waterfront project

Monday, 5 February 2018

The South West Development Commission has hailed the official reopening of the newly-revamped Koombana Foreshore as a significant milestone in the Transforming Bunbury's Waterfront project.

The makeover was celebrated at the Koombana Foreshore Festival on Saturday February 3, with members of the community joining dignitaries to celebrate the occasion.

SWDC acting chief executive officer Rebecca Ball said part of the vision presented to the public in October 2015 had now been made a reality.

"After much planning and work, Bunbury has a greatly enhanced foreshore that can be enjoyed by locals and visitors alike," Ms Ball said.

"The revitalisation - which includes a new landmark pedestrian bridge over The Plug that lights up at night - has not only transformed the foreshore into a thriving destination, but has also better connected the waterfront and the central business district.

"The City of Bunbury, State Government and Transforming Bunbury's Waterfront committee along with local businesses and the community are to be congratulated on achieving such a great result for Bunbury.

"The next step in the Transforming Bunbury's Waterfront project is to transform the Dolphin Discovery Centre into a modern tourist attraction."

The foreshore revitalisation was funded by the State Government, through Royalties for Regions and Lotterywest, and the City of Bunbury.

The redevelopment of the Dolphin Discovery Centre is expected to be complete by late this year.

Planning for stages two and three of the Transforming Bunbury's Waterfront project, including environmental studies for marine infrastructure, is under way.

Stage two involves enhancement and integration of two key locations: Casuarina Drive, including BP Beach and the foreshore, and Jetty Road causeway.

The final stage comprises the transformation of Casuarina Boat Harbour through the creation of a marina, mixed-use area and marine industry precinct.
