Koombana groyne transformed

The groyne at Koombana Bay has been upgraded, realising another important milestone in the ongoing transformation of Bunbury’s waterfront.

The upgraded structure has been rebuilt to a safer, higher level. It will better maintain the beach at Koombana Bay, stabilising the western end which provides space for the beach volleyball facilities and an erosion buffer for the amphitheatre at Koombana.

The upgrade also paves the way for the potential realisation of long-held plans for private investment in a multi-club facility at Koombana Bay, provided further environmental studies support the development.

It forms one piece in a bigger picture for the overall transformation of the Bunbury waterfront, with works also complete at nearby Casuarina Boat Harbour on a project to build a breakwater and reclaim land. This work is expected to unlock commercial and job opportunities.

In consultation with the lead agency, the South West Development Commission, the Department of Transport managed the delivery of the breakwater projects, overseeing work by the contractors.

Transforming Bunbury’s Waterfront continues to unlock Bunbury’s potential as a waterfront location, producing economic and social benefits.

From the Koombana Bay foreshore and pedestrian bridge to the upgrade of Jetty Road Causeway and Casuarina Drive redevelopment, the multi-stage project has renewed the waterfront.
