We are pleased to announce Joshua Jones as the newest member of our Business and Industry team. Over the past eight years, Josh has worked in export, sales and marketing within the Margaret River wine industry. His background in growing brands and connecting premium local wines with global markets perfectly positions him to support SWDC’s Tony Fletcher in assisting local businesses to achieve success in the international marketplace through our TradeStart program.
What is the focus of your work and a typical day for you at SWDC?
My current focus at the South West Development Commission is centred on trade and export support. No two days are the same – my work varies depending on the needs of the clients we’re assisting. This can include everything from site visits with local producers, to conducting market research and analysis, and helping businesses work toward their export goals.
What sort of clients contact you and what sort of support can you provide?
We work with a wide range of producers, each at different stages of their export journey. Some are just beginning and require detailed guidance on how to enter international markets, while others are more established and seek support in exploring new opportunities abroad. A key part of our role is facilitating connections between local producers and overseas markets, helping to open doors and build lasting trade relationships.
What is a project you have most enjoyed working on during your time at the Commission?
The most recent major project I’ve been involved in – and my first trade mission with the South West Development Commission – was the Craft Beer and Spirits Mission in March/April this year. It was an incredibly rewarding experience, especially being part of the collaborative effort that went into planning the activation and then seeing it all come together so successfully.
What do you like best about living and working in the South West?
I left the South West at 17 to study interstate and later work overseas, but even then, I knew this region was something special. The pristine environment, relaxed lifestyle, and breathtaking coastline – along with the strong sense of community – are what ultimately drew me back home.
